Comfort Food

Psalm 3

Due to current events, I decided to turn to the Psalms for some comfort. I started at the beginning and Psalm 3 was just what I was looking for. In this passage David is fleeing from his son. Imagine having your own child pursuing you, with an army.

NASB Psalm 3:1-2
O Lord, how my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
Many are saying of my soul,
"There is no deliverance for him in God." Selah.

I kind of feel like this sometimes. Like I am surrounded by people who hate everything I believe. And they seem to be growing in number.

NASB Psalm 3:3
But You, O Lord, are a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.

I don't need to try to find comfort in people who agree with me or look for events that I favor - The Lord is my shield and the one who lifts my head. I like how it isn't David lifting his own head, it is God who lifts his head.

NASB Psalm 3:4-5
I was crying to the Lord with my voice, And He answered me from His holy mountain. Selah. I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.

I wonder if David was unable to sleep, praying about his troubles, worrying and stressing out. And God's answer to his cries gave him peace enough to sleep. I may be sleeping but my days are filled with concern and stress.

NASB Psalm 3:6
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me round about.

Even if we are surrounded by people who hate us for our faith...

NASB Psalm 3:7-8
Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God! For You have smitten all my enemies on the cheek; You have shattered the teeth of the wicked. Salvation belongs to the Lord; Your blessing be upon Your people! Selah.

I need to remember that it is The Lord's battle. I need to do what I can, but not stress about the things that are out of my control. I need to remember God will be the victor, it's His battle. When I stress out maybe it's a sign that I don't fully trust that truth.
I am not the hero, He is.
